Super itchy, but special

I’m guessing many doctors dislike me. I’m the kind who works out what’s wrong themselves before actually getting to my appointment.

Last few weeks I’ve been getting what I thought was an allergic reaction, however I couldn’t pin down what I could possibly be allergic to. I was at my parents for Christmas and it started then with hives on my right hand, and legs and arms that felt like they were on fire. I presumed it could have been a change of washing powder but the reactions continued when I got home.

Each night for a week my right hand and arm had hives and always with two raised lines half way up my forearm. The only thing that seemed constant was that the raised lines would appear just before I went to bed and always on my right side.

Last night I turned off one of the lamps in my living room and like when House talks to Wilson (if you don’t watch House go and do it now, it’s awesome) I had my eureka moment. When I reach for the lamp’s switch I lean my right arm against the back of the cupboard it sits on, which doesn’t hurt but leaves a slight line, as happens if you lean on things. This, within 5-10 minutes, became raised lines.

Being a good scientist I used my left arm (now known as my control arm) and leaned it on the edge of the coffee table and sure enough the bumps appeared there too.

By the power vested in google it would appear I have dermatographic urticaria. Those good at latin will notice “derma” = skin and “graphic” = writing. Skin writing. I can bloody well write on my own skin, with my own skin. Although it becomes itchier than holy hell I do feel pretty special.
