Science / Skeptical Podcasts

As I spend a lot of my time walking or getting the bus to places and I like to spend that time listening to podcasts. It's a great way to learn and be entertained while having to look where you're going.

If you want to listen to podcasts on the move,
don't wash your headphones like I did...

Here is a list of my favourite science and scepticism based podcasts, some you will have heard of, some you might not and will hopefully give them a go. Most have great back catalogues to pick and choose from. I listen/subscribe to mine via iTunes but most are available elsewhere and so I will link to their websites and you can take it from there. Let me know if I've missed out your favourites.

Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe
Very popular weekly podcast from Dr. Steven Novella and others. First podcast I listened to regularly, great for an entertaining look at the latest in science and skepticism.

The Pod Delusion
The Pod Delusion is an award-winning weekly news magazine radio programme and podcast about interesting things. From politics, to science to culture and philosophy, it's commentary from a secular, rationalist, skeptical, somewhat lefty-liberal, sort of perspective. A bit like From Our Own Correspondent but with more jokes.

Skeptics with a K
Skeptics with a K is the podcast of the Merseyside Skeptics Society, recorded and edited at the region’s internationally-renowned Summit Studios. Each episode features Mike, Marsh and Colin chatting about stuff that interests them, often with a skeptical angle.

Freakonomics Radio
If you’re a fan of the Freakonomics book (a book about cheating teachers, bizarre baby names, self-dealing Realtors, and crack-selling mama’s boys) from New York journalist and author Stephen J. Dubner and award-winning economist Steven D. Levitt, you’ll love their podcast. Not always regular but the back catalogue of hour long episodes are great.

Material World
Science programme from BBC radio 4 with Quentin Cooper reporting on developments across the sciences.

More or Less: Behind the Stats
Tim Harford explains - and sometimes debunks - the numbers and statistics used in political debate, the news and everyday life. Great one to look up when there are unbelievable numbers in the news.

The Naked Scientist
These guys make science fun. As well as being interesting this podcast can be a great way to pick up ideas for bringing science to life for a general audience.
Dr. Chris Smith, together with his entertaining sidekicks, interview renowned scientists and researchers from all over the world and take science questions on any subject live from the listening public.

Little Atoms
Produced and presented by Neil Denny and others, Little Atoms “actively promote science, freedom of expression, scepticism and secular humanism.” Live talk show generally with one guest interview per show with some very interesting people.

Godless Bitches
A relatively new podcast created by Beth Presswood to focus on feminist issues from a secular perspective and to help increase the presence of women's voices in the secular community. Less structured, with more of a ‘live’ feel than others but some very interesting discussions and guests.
